Khmer speakers often produce other languages with near-native pronunciation, partly due to the rich phonemic system of the Khmer language. However, significant linguistic and cultural differences between Khmer and English create challenges in English use. This article aims to discuss key problems Khmer speakers face when using English and proposes possible recommendations. The article adopts a qualitative research design, drawing on a phenomenological approach and a literature review. Two main problems are identified: the influence of the Khmer language and Khmer culture. Regarding the linguistic influence, difficulties arise in pronunciation and grammatical structures due to differences between the two languages. As for the cultural influence, certain Khmer norms shape communication styles, which may lead to misinterpretation or miscommunication with native English speakers. The article offers practical suggestions for teachers and learners to improve English teaching and learning. It also calls for further research to enhance instructional quality at both public and private schools, strengthen students’ motivation, and address limited resources to better support Khmer speakers in learning and using English as a foreign language.
